Notes from the Field: Weekend Days by the Bay

Volunteers stumble upon a unique piece of trash at Damon Slough.

Save The Bay was out and about this month celebrating the change in seasons. A sunhat and sunscreen were a welcome addition to our tools for a day out doors. We started at Damon Slough in Oakland with a shoreline clean-up. As the winner of our Bay Trash Hot Spot contest this location was in serious need of some spring cleaning.

Throughout the Uncorked! Wine Festival guests flocked to the Save The Bay booth to enter in a prize drawing.

That same weekend we were the proud beneficiary of Ghirardelli’s Uncorked Wine Festival. We had over 30 volunteers out with us that day helping with chef demos, selling tickets and wearing our bay creature costumes. Once they were done with their shifts they were able to enjoy the fair and taste wines from over 25 different vintners.

Our Bay Creatures pose with NBC Bay Area representatives at the Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary Celebration.

The following weekend found us in the sponsor circle at the Golden Gate 75th Anniversary Celebration on the Marina Green in San Francisco. Thanks to our fabulous media sponsor NBC Bay Area, we were able to spread the word about all the amazing things we do here at Save The Bay to over 2,000 festival attendees.

We have so many exciting activity options for your volunteer experience that anyone can join us. If you love the outdoors and getting your hands dirty we have weekly options for you to get out and restore bay wetlands. If you are great at sharing ideas and talking to potential members we have tabling opportunities where you can represent Save The Bay. If you have a silly streak and want to let it shine our Bay creatures are excellent opportunity to let your wild side out!

For wetland restoration programs please visit our website at www.saveSFbay.org/volunteer.  For all other opportunities or for questions about all of our volunteer options please contact Natalie LaKeidan by emailing her at natalie@saveSFbay.org.
