We’re proud to announce Paul Kumar as Save The Bay’s new Political Director. A passionate fighter for progressive causes and an accomplished leader, strategist and campaigner, Paul will lead Save The Bay’s policy team to ensure the long-term health of the Bay.
“As an ecologist who’s spent his career in hardball politics, I have long admired Save the Bay’s sophisticated advocacy in the service of our region’s greatest natural treasure. I am thrilled to join in the work of sustaining and enhancing the bay for generations to come.”
–Paul Kumar, Political Director
Paul is an accomplished strategist and campaigner, with more than two decades of experience advocating for progressive causes, most of it in his role as a health care union leader.
In 18 years of policy and government affairs work with the Service Employees International Union on both coasts and in Washington, D.C., he led ambitious electoral and legislative efforts including major Bay Area battles focused on improving health care access and quality for consumers while improving wages, benefits, and working conditions for health care workers.
For the last five years, Paul has been a strategic consultant to a variety of unions and nonprofit groups on numerous projects including protecting San Francisco’s public input process under CEQA (the California Environmental Quality Act), securing groundbreaking community benefits around new hospital construction, and developing the policy content of Proposition 30 to address the state budget deficit and restore funding for vital programs.
In addition to identifying with Save The Bay’s mission, Paul was attracted to the position because he admires our track record of achieving landmark victories and influence beyond expectations for an organization of our size and budget.
Paul lives in Piedmont and has two daughters.
